When I was a mere designer in a large office, the ‘intrusion’ of a sales call was irritating. On starting my own business, I realised how important sales are to a business.

Initially, I relied on existing contacts but very soon realised that we would need a steady stream of new clients to build a stable trading base.

My partner and I took it in turns to cold call businesses with moderate success. However, when this didn’t achieve the desired results, we agreed that we needed to hire a professional; his name was Mark Urgent, I kid you not.

In the days before emails and text, a letter arriving on your desk, from Mark Urgent really did attract the recipient’s attention.

His method was simple: three strikes and you’re out. In other words, his aim was to get to the person making the buying decisions in three calls, getting us an appointment on the third call.

Our success rate from these calls was better than 50 per cent, as he had already done the filtering and selling over the phone.

As the designers, it was our job to sell ourselves at the meeting. If you’re still out there Mark, thank you! Some 35 years later we are still working with clients to whom you introduced us.

Today, Holdsworth Designs operates a more measured approach to gaining new clients. Over the years we have built up solid relationships with our customers; we set out to gain their trust, and through our detailed and comprehensive service we leave nothing to chance.

Service is everything. If the client wants it, we will provide it. But more than that, we build relationships. Let’s face it, we all have to work, we all have to earn money to pay the bills.

So, it seems obvious that it’s best to enjoy your work. It makes sense to work with people you like and get on with. Getting on with your clients and having a good rapport with them makes work more enjoyable, both for us and our clients.

If you can make a difference to somebody’s day by solving their problems, it makes everyone feel good. In the past we’d work with many, many varied clients. We’ve had a great working relationship with the majority. But some, no matter what we did, just weren’t satisfied.

We’ve been lucky enough to be able to refine our client base, so there is mutual respect between our clients and ourselves. This in turn enriches our client base, as those clients recommend us to their contacts.

We now build relationships via LinkedIn, though I must admit it took some time to persuade me that this was the new medium. But we are now building effective working relationships through LinkedIn.

Our posts, on all areas of exhibiting, advise and assist clients and potential clients on the most effective ways to utilise their exhibition space. All this helps to build confidence, relationships and ultimately our client portfolio.

Sales today at Holdsworth Designs are led by friendship and trust: everybody gains. But there will always be the clients that are only interested in one thing – money. There will always be competitors who are willing to undercut you; we’re not immune to these people.

But for our part, we give our clients the product and service they desire, and make good friends in the process. The only issue now is being able to sit back and enjoy the success of the last stand we designed and built for a client, before we have to move on to the next one! But who said life would be simple?

Ecobuild is the UK’s leading exhibition and conference for construction, design and energy in the sustainable built environment. It is also great to see that the organisers are putting sustainability firmly at the forefront of the agenda again next year.

Whether you are exhibiting at Ecobuild for the first time, or if you a veteran exhibitor, it is always a good idea to look at your approach and refine it, so that you can maximise your stand’s impact at the next show.

Here we cover some of the initial steps you will want to cover when booking a stand at Ecobuild.

Marketing goals

What are your overall marketing objectives? What do you need to do to achieve your goals? Look at what you want to achieve from exhibiting at Ecobuild and how you will achieve it. Your marketing goals could be:

  • You have a new product to launch and want to showcase this to your customers.
  • You want to drive more sales for your business and meet your customers.
  • You may have a new brand design and want to make people aware of it.

Pick the perfect exhibition space

Ecobuild is an extremely popular show, so you will want to book your space early. Head to the website now to book your space http://www.ecobuild.co.uk

  • If this is your first time at the show, check to see which of your competitors exhibited at Ecobuild last year, and have rebooked this year. This could indicate the importance of attending. Also look at the list of building and construction shows on ConstructUK.
  • Make sure you are positioned in the correct area of the show; the organisers can help you with this.
  • Think about your budget. Speak to your stand designer as they will be able to tell you an estimated cost for your stand. Once you have a budget and a potential stand size in mind, see where to position your stand:
    • Corner plots – These are always good as the stand is always visible and you can see potential visitors.
    • Close to a café /organisers stand – This is often where people congregate and you can use this opportunity to draw people to your stand.
    • Near your competitors – This might sound crazy (all estate agents are always close together!), but if you have a new product to launch, this could be a successful move.
    • Think about how many staff you will put on the stand. One open side with four staff could be too much and two staff on a stand with four open sides would not be enough.

Create a sustainable stand

  • With the emphasis on sustainability, it is key to think about this from the outset.
  • Exhibiting a new or existing sustainable product is important.
  • Simply explain the product’s sustainable credentials.
  • Join forces with an outside company whose ethos is around sustainability; they can provide parts of your stand build.
  • Use your products to build your stand.
  • Reuse parts of previous stands.
  • Make most, or all, of your stand re-usable

Choosing your exhibition designer

It is really important to work with a company that you feel comfortable with, who want you to achieve marketing success, and who will communicate with you throughout the whole process. When making your decision, you will want to research potential designers to work with. Once you have narrowed it down:

  • Ask to see their previous projects.
  • Look at their testimonials or recommendations on LinkedIn.
  • Meet with the company so that you get a feel for how they work.

Staffing – The face of your brand

The staff on your stand should be enthusiastic about your brand and products and they should be 100% motivated to achieve the exhibition goals. Here are a few areas to think about in the planning phase:

  • Your most client-facing members of staff will often be the best people for the job.
  • Have clear goals for the show and communicate them clearly.
  • Break down your goals so that they are achievable.
  • Clearly define roles for the staff on the day as this will help everything to run smoothly.
  • You could provide training for your staff so they excel at the show. Take a look at FaceTime who provide masterclasses in maximising your potential at exhibitions.

Tell your customers

The principles of exhibition marketing are to use the months leading up to the show to invite your customers and inform prospective customers of your intent to exhibit. Don’t forget, if you are planning a product launch, or a development that all existing clients should see, then use this to create interest and a buzz about your stand and to entice people to come and visit.

  • Blog about the show – don’t forget to add links of how they can obtain tickets.
  • Send an announcement in your newsletter about your intentions to exhibit.
  • Use your LinkedIn company page to keep people updated about the show.
  • Use other forms of social media to communicate to your audience.
  • Add the details of the show in your email signature.
  • Tell people – the one thing that is always forgotten! When seeing your clients, ask them if they would like to attend.

Post exhibition

Of course, your initial planning does not finish here.  You need to look at what needs to be done after the show – to find out more please read this post “Exhibition Essential Follow Ups

Client testimonial

“Holdsworth Designs produced a great stand with graphics, product samples, displays and lighting. Assembly and breakdown was done without fuss all to schedule and budget. They are easy to work with and understand building products. I am happy to recommend them.”

Ged Ferris, Marketing Manager at Cembrit Ltd

History

Cembrit recently went through a complete rebranding exercise, resulting in this year’s National Home Build & Renovation Show being the first ‘public’ outing for the brand.

Design Brief

The brief was to highlight the new brand and, in particular, show the new vented ridge tile alongside the existing range of natural and fibre cement slates. For the first time, Cembrit had a stand with all four sides open; but with four product areas to promote, this simplified the design process.

Using Cembrit’s New brand identity, including a new logo, brand decal and corporate colours, we were able to create a stand with maximum exposure and impact.

We had to use a raised platform to accommodate the electrics, which was another first for Cembrit. We incorporated LED lights to identify its presence and highlight the stand. Along with large rear-illuminated photos to external faces, this all added to the new Cembrit brand.

Martyn Holdsworth our MD reflects on the exhibition industry as Global Exhibitions Day approaches.

As Global Exhibitions Day approaches on 7th June 2017 I have reflected on my career within the exhibitions industry and with our highly skilled team, we look forward to an exciting future…

My life in exhibition design started in 1978, many years before the internet and the whole computer explosion. I recall being told (by my new manager), that the year before I started in the company, a client had commissioned a £100,000 stand. This was 1977, Jubilee year, and therefore £644,000 in today’s money! But it was most definitely the end of an era!

Over the subsequent decades, I have noticed trends in the exhibition design sector, which have been seen in all industries. These trends are mostly linked to finances, but also have also been created by new approaches to marketing.

I recall an early advocate of the internet, saying that “the interactive CAD designed exhibition stand’ is only just round the corner, it will be the death of the exhibition industry”. Well, computers and CAD have most certainly had an effect on exhibitions through design and production methods – in a very positive way for our industry. Exhibitions are a shop window, and as such, they need to be continuously reinvented in order to attract new visitors. Organisers took some time to realise that you can’t just keep putting out the same show year after year. Particularly now that change can be seen through the internet both instantly and universally.

However, the fact of the matter is that we, the public, will always want;

  • To see the purchases we wish to make
  • Taste the food we wish to purchase
  • Listen to the music we love to hear
  • To feel the ambience of the products we want to have in our lives

The internet cannot, and will never, replace our senses. So to the point: when companies need to reach their clients and potential new customers promptly and effectively, exhibitions are still an effective and efficient means of communication.

No doubt you already understand that the most direct way to promote your products or services is through exhibiting.

You know that a face to face meeting, if only fleeting, is infinitely more rewarding than almost any other form of contact.

As such, HDL (and our contemporaries) are still here designing and building exhibition stands.

This is why we at HDL are fully behind Global Exhibitions Day!

Testimonial

“To celebrate 30 years of trading and the launch of our ‘building-brands’ campaign, CFA exhibited at Ecobuild and it was a great success.

Our stand was very much a showstopper, with its bright walls glowing amongst our neighbours, and received many positive comments.”

David Ing, Managing Director at CFA

History

HDL have worked with David and Colin at CFA over many years. As an agency, CFA have often been asked to organise stand design for their clients.

HDL has been fortunate to be CFA’s exhibition contractor of choice. As such, when CFA won the contract to promote ‘Ecobuild’ and were themselves offered a stand at the show, HDL were asked to design their stand.

Brief

The space is open on two sides and should be used to promote the four facets of CFA’s business. The stand is to have hospitality and be open and inviting, whilst standing out through the use of crisp design features and well finished detail.

Design process

To accomplish the desired effect, HDL designer Greg took the CFA logo decals as the basis of the design and conceived circular demonstration pods on a radial raised floor.  With a bespoke bar and storage facility, contemporary furniture and large format illuminated rear walls, the design was complete.
